Would You let someone do your Software Development for you?

by admin on December 18, 2009

IT is a strange function within many organizations. Some companies regard it like the crown jewels and refuse to let anyone get close to the software development function. Other firms consider it a commodity service and are happy to pay someone else to do it. Most of the 21st century, I’ve been in organizations that value and pursue outsourcing IT. Along the way, have had the chance to talk to people who have never done it before. My observation is that if you haven’t done it, it’s a great dark mystery as to why a company would want to do it, or how they would go about doing it.

This topic is much bigger than any one blog post, so come back regularly to read as it unfolds. For today, however, I want to look a little bit more about why companies would want to outsource IT.

Just to set the record straight, for the moment, I’m talking about outsourcing to any firm that is not directly controlled by your organization. They may be just down the street and look just like you, or they may be halfway around the world and speak your language with an accent. Either way, much of the thought process is the same.
